Titled "Bab at the Bowster run up 1869" and signed bottom left “James Armstrong Gretna Green Carlisle. Bab at the Bowster was runner up to Master Mc Grath in the 1869 Waterloo Cup. There was a series of lithographs titled “The Celebrated Greyhound Champion” drawn on stone by James McGahey, 18 School Lane, Liverpool, from paintings after James Armstrong that featured Bab at the Bowster. English, circa 1885.

Oil on canvas of the celebrated Greyhound "Master Mc Grath" by James Armstrong (English, 19th Century) An oil on canvas of the celebrated Greyhound "Master McGrath" standing in a landscape by James Armstrong (English, 19th Century). Titled "Master McGrath 1868, 69, + 1871" and signed bottom left "James Armstrong Gretna Green Carlisle". Master McGrath won the Waterloo Cup on three occasions, 1868, 1869 and 1871. There was a series of lithographs titled "The Celebrated Greyhound Champion" drawn on stone by James McGahey, 18 School Lane, Liverpool, from paintings after James Armstrong that featured Master McGarth. English, circa 1885. Master McGrath He won the Waterloo Cup on three occasions, 1868, 1869 and 1871 and was the first greyhound to do so. He became such a celebrity that his owner Charles Brownlow, the 2nd Baron Lurgan KP (1831 - 1882) was asked to take him to be seen by Queen Victoria and the Royal Family. His success enabled his owner to build a terrace of houses in Walthamstow from Master McGrath's winnings. These houses now form part of Shernhall Street, but are still clearly marked at one end of the terrace as "Master McGrath Terrace". The Waterloo Cup The Waterloo Cup was the biggest annual hare coursing event in the United Kingdom and was often referred to by its supporters as the blue riband event of the coursing year. Run as a knock-out tournament between sixty four coursing greyhounds from Great Britain and Ireland, the three day event was run annually at Great Altcar in Lancashire, from 1836 to 2005 and used to attract tens of thousands of spectators to watch and gamble on the coursing matches.

An oil on canvas of the celebrated Greyhound "Bed of Stone" standing in a landscape by James Armstrong (English, 19th Century). Titled “ "Bed of Stone”, 1872” and signed bottom left “James Armstrong Gretna Green Carlisle. Bed of Stone, owned by Mr J A S Briggs of Blackburn won the Waterloo Cup in 1872. There was a print published of “Bed of Stone” after the painting by James Armstrong. English, circa 1885. Bed of Stone Bed of Stone, whelped in 1868, was a coursing pioneer, she became the first Greyhound ever to win all three Waterloo divisions: the Waterloo Purse (1870), the Waterloo Plate (1871) and the Waterloo Cup (1872). An oil on canvas of head studies of four Scottish Deerhounds by Miss Edith M Ashford (American, 19th/20th). To the reverse three ink written labels. “ “Four Scottish Lasses” by Edith M Ashford ??? House“ “Scotch Lasses” E M Ashford Marjorie” , named “Marjorie???, Mona, Bana, ???" and another with remnants of address “West Hayley West Stourbridge”. Possibly the dogs from Mr. H. P. Parker’s Stourbridge kennels. In 1985 a painting titled “Trio of Wolfhounds” by E M Ashford was sold at Sotheby’s London for £1,800. It would seem Miss Ashford was a fancier of the breed. English, circa 1900.

To the reverse signed in graphite �Franck Bail�. Tom was the dog of his artist friend the famous American painter Charles Sprague Pearce (1851 - 1914), who arrived in Paris in 1874, and lived in France until his death in 1914. Charles Sprague Pearce also painted a portrait of his dog see Maison de vente Beaussant-Lefevre, Paris 28th June 2000, lot 72.

The Princess, to the left, pictured standing holding a doll in right hand, with left hand extended towards her brother, Prince Arthur who pets a one of the Queen Victoria’s Collies. A before letters artist's proof mixed method engraving of Jack Russell / Smooth-haired Fox Terrier waking girl half-asleep beneath her eiderdown by William Callis Roffe (English, 1817 - c.1889), after Charles Burton Barber RO (English, 1845 -1894) painting of 1883. This was published on the 1st November 1883 by B Brooks & Sons 171 Strand. Bears blind seal bottom left "Artist London Proof". With remarque of a Bull Terrier head in the margin and pencil signature bottom right. The reverse bears label: "Arts & Craft Supplies Etchings R.B. Barker 29, Stonegate, York". The Lennox-Boyd database records a proof before letters example. A lettered example is in the collection of the British Museum. The work was later published 11th December 1913. in the "Journal of Education" "Picture Study " (III) by Mary E Cotting. Charles Burton Barber painting of this engraved work was sold at Christie's New York on 11th November 1998, for $365,500.

A bronze of a pair of King Charles Cavalier Spaniels seated on a tassled cushion by Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1796- 1875). It was made as a "presse-papiers" and exhibited at the goldsmith Fauconnier. For another example see the collection of the Walter Art Collection in Baltimore Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum. There is also an example owned by the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of America, that is given annually to the "Best in Show" recipient. Illustrated in "Barye: Catalogue Raisonn" des Sculptures (Gallimard, 2000), by Michel Poletti and Alain Richarme.
