The handles in the form of tree branches. French, circa 1840.

Pair of Setter bronze bookends after Pierre Jules Mene (French, 1810 - 1879) A pair of Setter bronze bookends after Pierre Jules Mene (French, 1810 - 1879). The squatting dogs are those from the artist's 'Chienne de Meute avec ses Petits', which was exhibited at the Salon de Paris in 1859. See "Pierre - Jules Mene Catalogue raisonne by Michel Poletti & Alain Richarme. The squatting dogs appear again in the Susse Freres "P. J. Mene and Auguste Cain" catalogue of 1902-1912, in the 'Chienne de Meute avec ses Petits' group and another "Groupe chien au repos".
