An ivory miniature of Princess Sophia Matilda of Gloucester (1773-1844) and her Maltese after Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (English, 1723-1792)
An ivory miniature in watercolour of Princess Sophia Matilda of Gloucester (1773-1844) Daughter of Prince William Henry, 1st Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, and her Maltese dog, after Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (English, 1723-1792). The sitter was the daughter of George III’s brother, Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester (1743-1805), and the wife he married in secret, the widowed Maria, Countess of Waldegrave, nee Walpole (1739-1807). This portrait was presumably commissioned by the sitter’s parent, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, it was exhibited at the Royal Academy in the same year as that of the Duchess (OM 1015, 4000698). The work by Reynolds is today in the Royal Collection. It was quite common for artists, especially miniaturists, to copy the works of famous painting on a reduced scale.
Initialled bottom right 'GB'.
