A Bichon by George Lafayette Clough (American, 1824-1901) A Bichon type dog in blue ribbon recumbent on a rug between a table leg and jardinière. To the reverse signed and dated in large script “G. L. Clough 1871â€. The painting was clearly inspired by the work of Henriëtte Ronner-Knip (Dutch, 1821 – 1909), whom the artist perhaps met on his travels to Europe in 1850 when he visited France, Germany, Holland and Italy. In 1871 he was painting urban scenes in Cleveland, Ohio, where he also worked as a photographic tinter. American 1871
