Oil on canvas of a recumbent dog of the Husk, Malamute, Esquimaux, Elkhound type by Robert Alexander, R.S.A, R.S.W. (1840 - 1923). Scottish, Signed 'R Alexander' and dated '1876'. Such dogs were rare in Britain in 1876, but were bought back by Artic explorers such as Captain J Ross and Captain William Edward Parry at the beginning of the 19th century.
