A pastel and crayon on buff paper of a standing Afghan Hound "Champion Garrymhor Souriya", by Gladys Davison (English, early 20th century). A famous and well documented Afgan, see, for example, “Hutchinson's Popular and Illustrated Dog Encyclopedia”. Garrymhor Souriya (Ashna Of Ghazni x Alfreda) was whelped 13 July 1931, by the fancier and breeder Mrs Olive Couper. Mrs Couper was simultaneously active in breeding and exhibiting German Shepherd Dogs and Salukis. Two breeds where she was a major founding influence, as well as Afghan hounds. Souriya four grandparents were all born in Afghanistan / India. Titled "Champion Garrymhor Souriya" and signed and dated bottom right “Gladys Davison 1933”.

Shibar was born 13th March 1938 (Westmill Bayezid Ansari x Safiya), registered KCSB 619W and breed by the Afghan fancier and owner of the famous Chaman Kennels, Mrs Molly Sharpe, then subsequently owned by Mrs F C (Peggy) Riley. Signed “FT Daws” and dated 45”, and titled “Shiba of Charman” English circa 1945.

A Bichon type dog in blue ribbon recumbent on a rug between a table leg and jardinière. To the reverse signed and dated in large script “G. L. Clough 1871”. The painting was clearly inspired by the work of Henriëtte Ronner-Knip (Dutch, 1821 – 1909), whom the artist perhaps met on his travels to Europe in 1850 when he visited France, Germany, Holland and Italy. In 1871 he was painting urban scenes in Cleveland, Ohio, where he also worked as a photographic tinter. American 1871
