The German Shepherd Dushka by Reuben Ward Binks (English, 1880-1950). Gouache on silk board of the H. R. H. Prince George, the Duke of Kent's (George Edward Alexander Edmund 1902-1942) German Shepherd Dushka by Reuben Ward Binks (English, 1880-1950). Prince George was born on 20 December 1902 at York Cottage on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, England. His father was Prince George, Prince of Wales, later George V). Whilst exhibiting at a major agricultural show Reuben Ward Binks attracted the attention of Mr Bland, King George V's gamekeeper and was asked to visit Sandringham to paint three of the his Labrador Retrievers. The royal relationship developed as he was commissioned to paint the famous terrier Ceasar for King Edward VII, his Cairn terriers, "Cora", "John", and "Hamish", Labrador, "Glen", for the Duke of York, (later King George VI), terrier, "Kris", for the Duke of Gloucester, German Shepherds for the Duke of Kent, (including Dushka in 1929), and some of the favourite dogs of Queen Alexandra and the pets of Princess Victoria. "Dushka" was clearly admired by Mr L Lockwood, Prince George's personal valet from 1921 to 1939, and Mr Lockwood became attached to the dog. The miniature by Reuben Ward Binks was clearly gifted in appreciation to Mr Lockwood on his leaving Prince George's service. Titled, dated and signed bottom left "Dushka" 1929 Ward Binks.
