"A West Highlander" is an Artist’ proof dry-point drawing of a seated West Highland Terrier for the series of etchings entitled, "Footsteps"; an edition limited to just 150 by Herbert Thomas Dicksee RE (English, 1862-1942), published by Frost & Reed in 1930. Numbered and signed in pencil, bottom right “8/150 Herbert Dicksee”. Lettered, bottom centre “Copyright by Frost & Reed Ltd. (of Bristol England), of the United States of America”. On the reverse there is a 1980’s label for “The Countryman’s Gallery 14 Harcourt Estate, Kibworth Harcourt, Leicestershire, Telephone 053753 3211 Sporting and Country Pictures, Prints and Books”. English, 1930".

“Pepper” a celebrated West Highland Terrier by Gourlay Steell RSA (Scottish, 1819 -1894). Pepper, whose name refers to his colour sits in a Scottish interior. Framed in the artist’s favourite rounded top gilt frame. Signed in red, bottom left “Gourlay Steell RSA” and dated “1871”. Titled top left, beneath frame “Pepper”, and initialled and dated top right “GS 1871”. Scottish 1871.

A pair of bronze and porcelain West Highland Terrier by William Brownfield (English, 1812-1873). The dogs seated on tasseled cushions in white paste porcelain each hold a pair of scones. These West Highland Terrier are of the type in Sir Edwin Landseer famous painting of Scratch in his 1839 painting "Dignity and Impudence". That West Highland Terrier was owned by Jacob Bell. An oval miniature on ivorine of a head and shoulder study of “Trudi”, a West Highland Terrier by Vera Haslam RMS (English). Signed at the bottom “VH”. In gilt pendant / easel backed frame, behind convex glass. The reverse reads “'Trudi' Vera Haslam R.M.S 1975/ Exhibited Royal Society of Miniature Painters London, 1975". A card inserted to the reverse reads "6. ‘TRUDI’ MRS VERA HASLAM ? ST ANTONY’S RD. BOURNEMOUTH N.F.S". As this miniature was not for sale it is possibly the artist’s own West Highland Terrier.

A rare preparatory drawing on ivorine by Cecil Charles Windsor Aldin RBA (English, 1870-1935), of “Boss-eyed Peter” his beloved West Highland Terrier published 1934 by Eyre & Spottiswoode in Aldin’s “Just Among Friends”. Signed and dedicated bottom right “from Cecil Aldin to Adele Astaire”. The reverse bears interesting pencil note “71/3 wide deep etch note artists instruction”. Lady Charles Cavendish Adele Astaire (American, 1896-1981) was Fred Astaire’s famous elder sister, and his partner in a 27-year career in vaudeville and theatre, beginning when he was five and she was eight. English, 1930.

A pair of bronze seated West Highland Terriers holding sconces, with brass detail, and the dogs set with glass eyes. This Terrier model is clearly inspired by Sir Edwin Landseer’s image of “Scratch” depicted in his 1839 famous painting of "Dignity and Impudence" commissioned by Jacob Bell. ("Dignity and Impudence" is today in the collection of the Tate Gallery, London).English, circa 1870.

This West Highland Terrier in light-hearted humorous pose was clearly modelled / inspired by Aldin's Terrier neighbour, "Slickerson", when the artist was living in Reading. Aldin famously remarked that "Slickerson" spent most of his upright and begging by the front door until he was let in. 11 x 7 � inches
