The Cavalier recumbent on a red tasselled cushion clearly inspired by the depiction of Dash, Queen Victoria's beloved King Charles Cavalier Spaniel from Sir Edwin Landseer's 1837-1838 famous painting "His majesty's favourite dogs and parrot", also known as "Hector, Nero and Dash with with the parrot, Lory", which can today be can be seen in the Royal Collection. The top corners with floral work and in the centre an oval of flowers framing the makers' name age and the date "Martha Shaw.agd.12 .yrs. 1850". The firesceen / pole screen in the manner of Bruce James Talbert (Scottish, 1838 - 1881) or Edward William Goodwin (English, 1833-1866). English, circa 1850
