Founded by Heneage Mandell in 1884, the London Playgoers Club met regularly “to afford members facilities for Critical Theatrical Discussions… in the form of… debate[s].” Playgoers in Victorian England did not generally enjoy a favorable reputation, stereotyped as abrasive at best and dangerous at worst. Mandell and his colleagues sought to promote a more genteel image of playgoers while nurturing a relationship between the players and audience.

An oil on canvas of a Royal Mail coach laden with passengers and luggage stopping at "Ye Old Hat Whitbread's Entire" by John Charles Maggs (English, 1819 - 1896). The coach wearing the correct Royal Mail livery, black with red door and lower panels, and Post Office red wheels. The original "Old Hat" was on the Uxbridge Road, Ealing, W13, the public house was Flynn's, after a period as the Walsingham Arms. Signed bottom left Signed "J. C. Maggs". English, circa 1880.
