“The Sentinel” A pencil drawing by Thomas Landseer ARA (1793 or 1794 – 20 January 1880) after Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (7 March 1802 – 1 October 1873) oil painting of the same. A black Spaniel (Dash) dog barks at a recumbent St Bernard (Lion), Being portraits of Lion and Dash, the Duke of Beaufort's dogs, from the painting Edwin Landseer exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1840. Thomas Landseer engraved a mixed media on chine collé print of the work, published 18th June, 1844 by Henry Graves & Co. English, circa 1844.

Note the Spaniel on a cushion would have been inspired by the depiction of Dash, Queen Victoria's beloved Cavalier from Sir Edwin Landseer's 1837-1838 famous painting "His majesty's favourite dogs and parrot", also known as "Hector, Nero and Dash with the parrot, Lory", which can today be can be seen in the Royal Collection. A bronze of a pair of King Charles Cavalier Spaniels seated on a tassled cushion by Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1796- 1875). It was made as a "presse-papiers" and exhibited at the goldsmith Fauconnier. For another example see the collection of the Walter Art Collection in Baltimore Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum. There is also an example owned by the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of America, that is given annually to the "Best in Show" recipient. Illustrated in "Barye: Catalogue Raisonn" des Sculptures (Gallimard, 2000), by Michel Poletti and Alain Richarme.

Bronze King Charles Cavalier Spaniel recumbent upon a tasselled cushion by Emmanuel Fremiet (1824 -1910). Signed on the cushion “F FREMIET”. An early small and very detailed bronze which Fremiet cast himself from his workshop and foundry at 42 Boulevard du Temple. This Spaniel bronze is especially interesting and rare displaying two patinations. French circa 1850.

A "Black Forest" ivory carved standing King Charles Cavalier Spaniel stick pin. Such carvings were from German workshop of the Graf von Erbach-Erbach in Odenwald, and the Kehrer family at Erbach, Ernst (working 1830-40) and his son Edouard (1812-63). They were made from around 1830 to 1860. German, circa 1850.

A 19th century Aesthetic Movement ebonised and gilt firesceen / pole screen with sampler of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The Cavalier recumbent on a red tasselled cushion clearly inspired by the depiction of Dash, Queen Victoria's beloved King Charles Cavalier Spaniel from Sir Edwin Landseer's 1837-1838 famous painting "His majesty's favourite dogs and parrot", also known as "Hector, Nero and Dash with with the parrot, Lory", which can today be can be seen in the Royal Collection. The top corners with floral work and in the centre an oval of flowers framing the makers' name age and the date "Martha Shaw.agd.12 .yrs. 1850". The firesceen / pole screen in the manner of Bruce James Talbert (Scottish, 1838 - 1881) or Edward William Goodwin (English, 1833-1866). English, circa 1850

A rare mid 19th century silver plated taperstick / candlestick of a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel seated on a comfy tassel cushion, holding the taperstick by Elkington & Co, after John Bell (English, 1811-1895). Lightly gilded decoration to the sconce and panels to the ornate base. Stamped “John Bell Elkington”. Marked beneath the base "PUBḎ BY ELKINGTON & CO” with model number “862”. John Bell trained and exhibited at the Royal Academy and received several commissions from Queen Victoria. This King Charles Cavalier is no doubt modelled on the Queens favourite and famed Spaniel ‘Dash’.
