A rare Charles Vyse model of a Pekingese dog, modelled seated, covered in a tenmoku brown glaze Incised Charles Vyse Chelsea to base, 17cm. wide. Reverse glass ‘export’ painting of a Chinese courtesan of the Imperial Court holding a Pekingese. Pekingese were Palace dogs for the sole enjoyment and preserve of the Emperor, and with his blessing, his family members, his wives, concubines and favoured eunuchs. For the strictest seclusion of the Court, their removal from the Palace precincts was strictly forbidden. Reverse glass paintings were the preserve of Imperial patronage, but also exported and keenly sought for English country house collections in the 18th century.

A set of double sided 18ct gold and enamel octagonal chain link cufflinks of miniature in enamel of Pekingese heads. Marked 18CṮ, and J.W, probably James Walker. These are early images of the breed in Great Britain and are an interesting historical record of the breed. English, circa 1900.

An oil on canvas of a Pekingese being held by its owner by Tadeusz Styka (French/Polish, 1889-1954). Signed bottom left 'Tad.Styka'. It has been suggested that the hands in this painting are those of the former owner, Anna Eugenia La Chapelle Clark. Her husband William Andrews Clark (1839-1925), was painted by Tadeusz Styka, (see Christies New York, Sale 3479, An American Dynasty: The Clark Family Treasures, on 18 JUNE 2014, LOT 6 AND 7). The Clarks were prominent American collectors of a vast array artworks, from Antiquities to Impressionism; they had a particular fascination for 19th century French painting. William Clark bequeathed his collection of over 800 artworks to the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. The Burg Rttgen a castle in the town of Heumar, in the Rhine district of Kln was owned in 1933 by the Peter Paul Mhlens (1875-1945), the Kln businessman and industrialist. 1933, German.

Pastel of a head study of the Pekingese Shadza and Che-ka by Miss Dorothy S Hallet (English, fl 1913-1934). The Pekingese were owned by Mrs Fletcher of Langrish House, Hampshire. Signed, bottom left Dorothy S Hallet and titled and dated bottom right Shadza & Che-ka 1939. Interestingly and no doubt in recognition Shadza was the name given Empress Tzu Hsi favourite dog painted by Miss Carl, after the Boxer revolution. English,circa 1939.

The famous dog owned by Hindley Taylor one of the most famous breeders of the period, and this painting is illustrated in the book on Pekingnese written by Hindley Taylor. Champion San San of Kyratown was later owned by Mrs Ashton-Cross a famous Pekingese fancier of the day. Titled bottom right "Ch. San San of Kyratown" and dated "1930" and signed bottom left "Ward Binks"
