An oil on canvas of a Labrador Retriever by Maud Earl (English, 1864-1943) A large oil on canvas a standing Labrador Retriever by Maud Earl painted several large scale oils of Labradors for such famous patrons and fanciers of the breed such as Thomas W Twyford, Whitmore Kennels, Lorna, Countess Howe, (Mrs Mrs Quintin Dick), Banchory Kennels, Duchess of Hamilton and Bandon, Dungravel Kennels, and the Butter family (a Scottish estate near Pitlochry) Faskally Labradors. English, circa 1910.
And she painted a prized Pointer in a similar juxta deportment, “Largo”, auctioned by Bonhams 12th October 2022. This was commissioned by William Arkwright, (1857-1925) of Sutton Hall, Sutton Scarsdale, a leading authority on Pointers and the author of The Pointer and his Predecessor, published 1902.
Note how Maud Earl’s background is almost completely void allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the dog, a technique employed in many of her canine studies.
