77 ) An oil of Boxer dogs by Lord Edward Joseph Bellew (Irish, 19th/20th) and J.A. Daniel (British, 19th/20th)
A large oil on 'Windsor and Newton' canvas of three near life size seated Boxer dogs in picket fenced landscape by Lord Edward Joseph Bellew (Irish, 19th/20th c., for the dogs) and J.A. Daniel (British, 19th/20th c., for the landscape). To the reverse titled "Is Marriage a Failure" and dated 1890. Signed and dated, in red, bottom right 'Bellew .. J A Daniel .. 1890'. To the reverse , in ink, titled "Is Marriage a Failure", and inscribed 'Dogs by Lord Bellew _ Landscape by J.A. Daniel _ 1890'. [Note: Lord Bellew had travelled to German, in fact he died suddenly in 1895 at Frankfurt-am-Main-Bad Mannheim, where he was living. It is apparent from this painting in which he commissioned the London landscaped painter J A Daniel that Bellew was a fancier of the breed. It was not until 1894, when three Germans by the names of Friedrich Robert, Elard Knig, and R. Hpner decided to stabilize the breed and exhibit at dog shows. This was done in Munich in 1895, and the next year they founded the first Boxer Club, the Deutscher Boxer Club. The Deutscher Boxer Club went on to publish the first Boxer breed standard in 1902. This 1890 portrait would appear to be a very early depiction of the breed.] 34 x 56 inches
