88 ) Watercolour on paper of Scottish Terriers by Margaret Law (English, 1905-1983)
Ink and watercolour on paper of Scottish Terriers by "M Law". Signed in pencil "M Law", further titled "Laurieston Loyal" "Harlothian Locket". Circa 1930 Dog World 12.8.10 by Nick Walters The two Scotties in this picture are Laurieston Loyal and Harlothian Locket (late Lonkley Locket), both owned by R C K Thomson (Harlothian) of Wakefield. Loyal was born in 1927, bred by A Kyle and was by Laurieston Lorehart ex the unregistered Flora. He was owned by W Davidson (Laurieston) before being transferred to Thomson. Lorehart was by Ch Laurieston Leaper, CC winner at Crufts in 1924, who in turn was by Laurieston Lauchie, a son of Ch Bobby Burcott. Locket who was born in 1929 was by the great stud dog of the day, Ch Heather Necessity ex Lonkley Leal and was bred by Mr and Mrs W N Walton. Leal was by Ch Merlewood Aristocrat, a son of Laurieston Lauchie. Necessity was owned by Robert Chapman and quickly became a champion, ending up with 15 CCs at the time − a breed record. He was never beaten in the ring by one of his own breed and had the distinction of winning BIS all-breeds on three occasions, including Crufts in 1929, where he took his third CC, and reserve the following year. Dorothy Casperz (The Popular Scottish Terrier 1956) described the dog as "a history maker ... practically revolutionised the breed." He was used at stud extensively and sired 18 champion children. Loyal and Locket had far less distinguished careers, nevertheless, someone loved them enough to have their portraits painted. The best Loyal managed was a succession of seconds in limit dog classes, including Crufts in 1930 and Locket a third in limit dog at Sheffield and District Kennel Association championship show in 1930.
