The dogs are seated on velvet tasselled cushions and neoclassical plinths. French, circa 1860.

An oil on canvas of The York and Edinburgh Royal Mail Coach trapped in a snow drift on a country lane by James Pollard (English, 1792–1867). Two coachmen encourage the horses while another man tries to unblock the wheel, and another on one of the horses rides off in the field behind; trees behind for help. The coach fully laden, wears the correct Royal Mail livery, black with red door and lower panels, Post Office red wheels, and The Royal Coat of Arms on the door with the name of the town at the end of the coach’s route.Signed and dated 1827. English 1827.

The Yarmouth Royal Mail “Woodbridge Yoxford” coach with seven up parked at the “Three Cups Hotel” Colchester, outside the offices of “The Old Blue Coach Office” and “Star Coach Office” beneath a full moon evening, by James Pollard (English, 1792-1867). The coach fully laden, wears the correct Royal Mail livery, black with red door and lower panels, Post Office red wheels, and The Royal Coat of Arms on the door with the town name “Woodbridge” and “Yoxford” signifying the coach’s route. The reverse bears the gallery label of “Arthur Ackermann & Sons Ltd 3 Old Bond Street, London W1 Established 1783”. Signed and dated middle bottom “J Pollard 1831”. English, circa 1831. An historic oil, the “Three Cups Hotel”, Colchester stood on the north side of the High Street from 1701 until its demolition in 1972, having been rebuilt in 1886. Pigot's directory stated that the Royal Mail coach left the Cups every night at 12.15 for London. This would seem to be about the time of night Pollard recorded the coach.

A black Spaniel (Dash) dog barks at a recumbent St Bernard (Lion), Being portraits of Lion and Dash, the Duke of Beaufort's dogs, from the painting Edwin Landseer exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1840. Thomas Landseer engraved a mixed media on chine collé print of the work, published 18th June, 1844 by Henry Graves & Co. English, circa 1844.

The reverse bears the remnants of the framer’s label “Hay & Lyall, Decorators, Carvers, Gilders & Printsellers to the Queen, 73 Union Street Aberdeen, established 1811”. Hay received his Royal Appointment as Carver & Gilder to Queen Victoria at Aberdeen in 1846. English, circa 1850.
