Facsmile of the Misses M.F. & H.M. Loughrey’s Scottish Deerhound, “Champion Tragic of Ross†by Miss Monica F Gray A facsmile of the Misses M.F. & H.M. Loughrey’s famous Scottish Deerhound “Champion Tragic of Ross†after the highly respected English canine artist Miss Monica F Gray. Titled bottom right “Tragic of Ross†and signed bottom left “Monica Grayâ€. Tragic one of the most famous Scottish Deerhounds, his pedigree can be found in many of today’s lines. It has been said that Tragic left its mark across the entire strain of Scottish Deerhounds everywhere, with this name appearing on practically every deerhound pedigree. The Ross Kennels and Deerhound fanciers, Misses M.F. & H.M. Loughrey’s of Londonderry, were famous for their Scottish Deerhounds. This was clearly painted when Tragic was just a young dog and before becoming a champion. Bred by Miss G Esmonde, Tragic won 7 Challenge Certificates. Tragic’s pedigree is shown below. English, circa 1925.

"Calling Shapes and Beckoning Shadows" Scottish Deerhound photogravure after Maud Earl (English, 1864-1943) A rare hand inscribed photogravure of a Scottish Deerhound known as "Calling Shapes and Beckoning Shadows" after Maud Earl (English, 1864-1943) produced for the photogravure portfolio limited to 500 editions titled "British Hounds and Gun Dogs", published by The Berlin Photographic Company published in 1902.
Titled in pencil bottom left by the artist “ "Calling Shapes and Beckoning Shadows†Deerhound Ch Rufford Ben d'Orâ€.
Then unusually dedicated bottom right in pencil "Gladys June 28th 1904 with many Happy Returns Maud Earl".
Some artist's proofs were published in addition to the 500 editions of the portfolio. Ch Rufford Bend Or, owned by Mrs Henry Armstrong. Interestingly titled "Ben d'Or" in the portfolio index, but correctly titled here by the artist in pencil "Ch Rufford Bend Or" as can be confirmed by the Kennel Club Stud Book and other authoritative books. Rufford Bend Or (1896-1902) was bred by Messre. Holme and Holliday, and was the winner of 50 prizes, including a first prize at Birmingham in 1900, 10 first and challenge prizes in 1901, and 5 in 1902. Mrs Armstrong was one of the prominent and fanciers, breeders of Deerhounds and Bend Or was one of her successful winners in the ring, being considered very typical if small. The skeleton of Champion Rufford Bend-Or, was presented to the Zoology at the Natural History Museum by Mr. F. L. Armstrongin in 1902. Ch Talisman was thought of as being Mrs Armstrong's most beautiful hound. A photogravure of "Calling Shapes and Beckoning Shadows" from "British Hounds and Gun Dogs" (the portfolios were often split) can be seen in the collection of The Kennel Club.
