51 ) A porcelain Greyhound and hare by Jacob Petit (French, 1796-1865)
A porcelain standing Greyhound with a hare between its legs by Jacob Petit (French, 1796-1865). Signed on the base “JP”. Jacob Petit (French, 1796-1865) was one of the most famous French porcelain manufacturers of the 19th century. He began studying painting at Gros, then left Paris for England which gave him the taste for decorative objects. On his return to France in 1830, he published a book of interior decoration. His greatest interest was though in porcelain. By 1838 he bought Weill Baruch, in Fontainebleau. In 1850, he merged his two factories in Avon, but some years later, in 1862, he retires from Paradise Street Poissonière, transferring its business to one of his workers, Jacquemain.

An early 20th century bronze sculpture of a standing on a black marble bass by Johann Kurt Pflug (German, 1897-1956) is of interest. Signed to the base ‘Pflug’ German, circa 1920, approximately 12 ¼ x 12 ½ inches wide.

Silk scarf “Made in France” by Hermes designed by Xavier de Poret (French, 1894 - 1975) for his scarf first issued in 1956 and called “Les Levriers”, GreyhoundS. It is said that when Mrs Peggy Stancomb of Tinribs Whippets was living in Paris she bought most of the scarves as presents! This was the design Hermes commissioned for their silk “Les Levriers” 1956 scarf range that came in six colour variants.

Black forest Ivory Setter Plaque. Such carvings were from German workshop of the Graf von Erbach-Erbach in Odenwald, and the Kehrer family at Erbach, Ernst (working 1830-40) and his son Edouard (1812-63). They were made from around 1830 to 1860.

French gilt metal inkwell topped with a seated poodle in a "Lion trim" cut. The interior reveals two ceramic inkwells and pen holders. French, circa 1830.

66 ) Maltese Terrier Carved Inkwell.
Swiss "Black Forest" carved linden wood inkwell and pen holder in the form of a begging Maltese. The carving is inspired by the tribute to "Ninette" a terra-cotta “Mausolée de Ninette” (Mausoleaum for Ninette), at the Musée Historique Lorrain, Nancy, by Claude Michel Clodion (French, 1738-1814). Clodion's statue being flanked by two similar standing Maltese dogs. German, circa 1880 Most likely made in Brienz, Bernese Oberland, Switzerland. The famous travel guide, Baedeker stated at the time that Brienz with a population of 2400 had some 600 working as woodcarvers. The Swiss Woodcarving Museum in Brienz may be visited today.

An English late 19th century finely engraved Greyhound ‘tippling’ handled crop / whip. The top of the handled hinged to conceal to hide an inebriating tipple. English, circa 1890

A Parian / biscuit ware model of a recumbent King Charles Cavalier Spaniel seated on a cushion. Note the Spaniel on a cushion would have been inspired by the depiction of Dash, Queen Victoria's beloved Cavalier from Sir Edwin Landseer's 1837-1838 famous painting "His majesty's favourite dogs and parrot", also known as "Hector, Nero and Dash with the parrot, Lory", which can today be can be seen in the Royal Collection. A late Victorian black silk parasol, with deep black lace edging, red silk linned and horn tips to the extremities of the frame. The one piece cane carved to handle with a King Charles Cavalier head, the eyes inlaid in glass. Circa 1890.
