25 ) Flatcoat Retriever holding a Ptarmigan oliograph for Buchanan’s Black and White Whisky after Maud Earl (English, 1864-1943)
An oliograph showing a Flatcoat Retriever holding a Ptarmigan. The image was famously published in Buchanan's Black & White Scotch Whisky advertisements in 1922 / 1923, after Maud Earl (English, 1864-1943). Before Buchanan’s decided on the Scottish Terrier and West Highland Terrier (Scottie and Westie) as branding for their whisky, they used all sorts of different dogs to promote their product, often commissioning paintings from the top animal painters of the day, such as here with Maud Earl. Those by Maud Earl included three Yorkshire Terriers, English Pointer, four West Highland Terriers, Scottish Terrier, three Bull Terriers and puppies in a basket. This is rare being complete in Buchanan's original black frame inscribed, top “Black & White” then bottom “Scotch Whisky”.
