A Japanese Meiji period silk embroidery / textile of a St Bernard A Japanese Meiji period embroidery in fine silk thread on brown silk of a recumbent St. Bernard in short and tall grasses. Possibly inspired after a painting by Alexander Pope (American, 1848-1924). And possibly Sozayemon Nishimura of Kyoto and Tokyo purveyor to His Imperial Japanese Majesty's household.

The reverse bears label “The New Gallery Summer Exhibition 1906” and completed in ink in the artist’s hand “H H Princess Toussoun’s Basset Hound “Count” Mrs Gertrude Massey 11 Melina Place Grove End Rd. N.W.
Is believed to be Princess Fatma Toussoun, nee' Ismail, (1851-1920) sister of Khedive Tewfik, Sultan Hussein & King Fouad I, a dog fancier particularly in the Pekingese breed.
The dog interestingly titled “Basset Hound” is clearly a variant of a Basset Griffon.

Ch. Rufford Ormonde won his first C.C at The Kennel Club Show of 1892, when he also won, what is now the British Collie Club Challenge Trophy for, the first time. He won this trophy further, twice in 1894, after his name change. This makes him the only dog to have won this trophy in different names, Ormskirk Ormonde and Rufford Ormonde.
