To the reverse the artist has written possible titles in ink “Patience” or “Ye’ll no be much longer?”, or “Not guilty, Miss us” and in pencil Isn’t Love Wonderful” suggesting the work was published. A “Marble Hill Gallery 72 Richmond Road Twickenham Middx” label to the reverse reads “C Ambler. The Two Friends, pencil and coloured mashes, heightened with white. Lived in Buckhurst Hill Esses , Exhibited two works at the Royal Academy between 1912-1914.” With stock number “P926ms”.

The oil is clearly partly inspired by Sir Edwin Landseer RA, (1802-1873) earlier, 1845 Royal Academy exhibit of the King Charles Spaniels (also known as the "The Cavalier's Hat" / "The Cavalier's Pets").
The reverse bears a Richard Green 44, Dover Street, London, W1X 4JQ label "Henry Hugh ARMSTEAD - A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - Signed and dated "1866 " Panel: 12 x 14 in " AK305 (Stock Number).

Titled "Bab at the Bowster run up 1869" and signed bottom left “James Armstrong Gretna Green Carlisle. Bab at the Bowster was runner up to Master Mc Grath in the 1869 Waterloo Cup. There was a series of lithographs titled “The Celebrated Greyhound Champion” drawn on stone by James McGahey, 18 School Lane, Liverpool, from paintings after James Armstrong that featured Bab at the Bowster.
